My Trip to Germany 9/20-9/25/2007

Okay So i was given an amazing opportunity to go with another exchange student and her host family to Munich, Germany. I was soo excited for this trip!!! The host mom planned several major historical places to see. I am sorry its taken me so long to finish this blog, but for some reaosn its hard for me to blog. But at least I am getting it up eventually. The exchange student's name is Alice and her host parents names are Sonja and Ueli. We stayed with Sonja's mom in Feldmoching which is like a suburb of Munich, i think.

Thursday September 20, 2007

So I met Alice and Sonja in Bern to take a train to the Bodensee, which is practically on the other side of switzerland. The Bodensee, which is a lake, borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Sonja and Ueli have an apartment there that they want to eventually live in permanently. Anyways, we arrived in the little town around 7 pm or so. It was just me alice and sonja for dinner because ueli had a guy's night with his friends. We had spaghetti and then headed to bed bc we had an early start the next morning.

Friday September 21, 2007

So we got up fairly early, like 645 am or so. We were leaving at 8. I took a shower and then went downstairs for breakfast. bread and butter as usual. haha then we loaded up our suitcases. I was actually really happy bc ueli(the host dad) had a bigger suitcase than me!!! I borrowed a suitcase from my host brother!! haha Thats a big accomplishment for me bc i usually overpack!! haha So anyways, then we headed. We had to get gas first though. It was my first time to get gas in Switzerland! haha After getting gas, we drove for like 10-15 mins and then we were all of sudden in Germany. I didnt even realize we had gone over the border. We yielded to this guy and then he waved us on and that was it. No passports or anything. i was really suprised by this!! haha but ya then we drove a little bit longer, then we got on a ferry to cross bodensee, which is just a lake. See in german is Lake, slightly confusing, huh? haha so then we drove for like several hours to HohenSchwangau and Neushwanstein. It was really funny bc we got lost several times and Sonja and Ueli were fighting but bc it was in german i couldnt really understand it but i understood they were fighting!! haha These are two amazing castles. We actually only toured one of them, Hohenshwangau bc King Ludwig actually only lived in this one. Neuschwanstein never was finished and was really just a shrine to royalty. I was a little bit disappointed i wasnt able to tour Neuschwanstein bc I had done a puzzle of the castle this past summer. but its okay i at least got to see it. Hohenschwangau was really amazing too. I wasnt allowed to take pictures inside though :( thats okay though. The tour was in german but sonja helped me a little bit, she explained a few things in english, thankfully!! then after that we went into Schwangau to have what i thought would be lunch with Sonja's dad. However it was just coffee and apple strudel. I was slightly disappointed bc i was really hungry! haha but suprisingly the apple strudel was enough to hold me over till dinner. By this time it was about 2 pm in the afternoon. We then headed to the Wieskirche. Its a GORGEOUS church in the middle of nowhere. It was built as a shrine to this statue of jesus that was said to be crying. at first they built a small chapel but there were so many people making pilgrimmages to the shrine they needed to build a bigger place for worship. it was absolutely amazing!! ill post a few pics and links to look at my pictures. after that we had to pay to use the bathroom. pretty much everywhere you have to pay or you need a code from the place of business! its pretty crazy!! we then got back in the car and drove a little bit longer to sonja's mom house. luckily she told her mom that we didnt really have lunch so she could prepare something big and warm for us. It was nice to finally get out of the car and stretch!! haha that was my first really long roadtrip in a car!! haha We arrived around 530 or so. We then had dinner. It was some sort of soup. I dont know for sure what kind it was. I never ask, i just eat. haha we also had homemade pretzels! hmmm!! they were delicious! so ya then we talked a little bit after dinner.well dinner is actually a pretty big event. it lasts pretty long! haha then we were off to bed bc it was gonna be another slightly early morning the next morning!!

Saturday September 22, 2007

We were leaving the house by 10 but Sonja's sister was going to be at the house at 915 for breakfast so we had to get up at like 8 and start taking showers. We had to shower in the basement bc the shower on the second floor didnt have hot water. The shower was literally in the basement next to the washing machine! That was kinda weird!! haha So then i dressed for the day! haha Then it was time for breakfast!! as always bread, butter and jam. But Germans also eat cheese and salami with breakfast, oh and of course pretzels!! i love them!! haha Oh and Sonja's niece was absolutely adorable!!! she was really shy at first, and it was a little difficult to play with her since she spoke bavaran german!!! there are soo many dialects of german!! haha She was even dressed up in a dirndle, the tradtional german outfit. i wish i could've taken her home with me!! haha so we rode the bus to the train station. we took the U-Bahn which is basically like a subway system. i didnt really like it. i like the swiss train system bc you get to see scenery!! but the stations were really nice. So then we arrived in the main station in Munich. We then walked to wear the Oktoberfest Parade was. There were soo many people there!! And so many people dressed in traditional clothing. it was sooo cute!! haha The parade was of all the breweries tha were at oktoberfest. and only munich based breweries can be at oktoberfest. After oktoberfest parade, we walked to the actual oktoberfest. Oktoberfest was amazing!! SOO MANY PEOPLE!!! haha It was a HUGE fair with a bunch of beer! haha There were lots of fair rides. The beer tents were really cool. The decorations were amazing!! and there were soo many people inside too!! anways..we basically walked around and looked in all the tents and looked around at all the rides. We rode the star flyer and the Ferris wheel of course. We ate this delicous sweet nuts! they were soo amazing!! i could eat those forever and not get sick of them! haha so ya that was basically oktoberfest, me and alice didnt really know what exactly to do, so we kinda walked around like chickens with our heads cut off. especially since it was just me and her. her host parents let us go off by ourselves. haha but ya oktoberfest pretty much shuts down at 1000 so we were home fairly early bc we left a litle early so the trains wouldnt be too crowded. oh and my camera died fairly early in the night too!! i even brought my charger and converter just in case, but the converter didnt fit the outlets!! i was soo mad bc my camera is like my comfort!! and the girl i was with didnt take like any pictures!! :(

Sunday September 23, 2007

This was a slightly gloomy day, not because of the weather either. We went to Dachau, which is where Sonja grew up. We went to the castle first, and from there we could see Munich and the somewhat of skyline it has. There really arent much skyscrapers in munich, actually in all of europe! haha We also had a coffee there too. But the gloomy part of the day began after the castle. Most of you probably recognize Dachau as the name of a concentration camp. There is also a whole seperate city as well apart from the concentration camp. But we went to the concentration. It was Sonja's first time to visit the camp, even though she lived there her whole life. Its really hard to desribe what i felt when i was at the camp. I saw all the buildings where prisoners were, places were prisoners were killed and tortureed. i also read a lot about the history of the camp. it was one of the first camps. it was originally built for 6,000 people but by the end of the war it held over 32,000 people. it was crazy some of the stuff that went on in the camp. i wasnt able to read everything about the camp bc it was just too much. it was in english though, so that was good!! but it was just amazing to be there to learn about history. it was rather gloomy though thinking about all that horrible stuff. so afterwards, we went to a biergarten and had picinic. it was really fun. we just sat out in the huge garden and you could bring your own food. It was very pleasant. We then went to another castle. The Duke that built this one was trying to make his own versailles in Germany. It was really pretty. So ornate!! We spent quite a bit of time in there but then we got kicked out because they were closing. But then we walked in the garden which was soo pretty! i would love to live in a castle!!! it would be soo much fun!! haha so ya that was basically sunday.

Monday September 24, 2007

Sonja and Ueli took us into Munich to some of the churches and buildings in Munich. The churches wer soooo amazing!! So detailed!! A lot of Munich isnt very old because of World War II. Everything is rebuilt, but they rebuilit it like the old times so it looks old. I am glad they did that bc i like the old look rather than the modern look. We also saw the duke residence and several other places. We also did some shopping. which was really fun. I bought another pair of sunglasses for like 8 euros and also a cute pair of black shoes!! Alice bought a wallet i think. but ya thats basicallly what we did all day. In the evening, we made another trip back to oktoberfest and took pictures with guys in lederhosen. it was amazing!! I dont have the pictures yet. My camera's battery died! it sucked!! i love taking pictures and for three days i didnt have a camera! but it was really fun taking pictures with the guys in lederhosen. I was soo exhausted at the end of the day though!!

Tuesday September 25, 2007

So we got up fairly early to head back to switzerland bc Sonja had somesort of meeting to get back for. I slept in the car bc one my ipod froze so i couldnt listen to it and the weather wasnt great so i didnt have much to look at. It was like dozing in and out of sleep though. We drove through austria! haha so now ive been to austria! haha i didnt even realize we were even in austria at first! haha well sonja dropped us off at the train station, we then headed to zurich to get home. i was ready to get home and back to familarity! Plus the suitcase i was using was broken and it was a pain to carry around with me!!

My trip to Munich was really fun! I enjoyed it very much!! I was really grateful to Sonja and Ueli for inviting me along!

Bike Ride

Sunday September 16th, 2007

So my host parents took me on a bike ride to my host dad's cousin's house. I rode tandem with my host sister. Its a two person bike! it was so much fun! i think the only reason i survived the bike ride was bc i had help or i was doing the helping. my host sister had the control of the bike! haha Its really kinda hard to ride tandem bc if you ride in the back you cant really move the handle bars bc you dont go anywhere but you distrub the balance of the bike. The total distance of the ride was 43 km which is about 27 miles! I couldnt believe that i did that! My butt hurts a whole lot right now though! It was really cool though, bc i was able to see lots of the country side! At my host dad's cousin's house, we had brunch. It consisted of bread, yogurt, fruits, egg thing, meatbread thing. and cheese! it was actually really delicious! after brunch, we just relaxed for a little bit. i sat in the sun and fell asleep. my host parents played some game though. it was really nice in the sun. i felt like i was in texas again. haha i actually got a little red from being in the sun. But dont worry mom, i had some sunscreen on! haha after a couple of hours we headed back to burgdorf. on the way back we stopped at a castle. it was absolutely amazing!! i was really mad at myself though bc i didnt have my camera. the battery died the night before. My host dad got a picture of me on the bike though, so ill have to get it from him so i can share it with yall. anyways...the castle was sooo cool. i wanna go back there so i can take some pictures! haha but ya thats what sunday was like.

Right now im currently on fall break until the 15th of October!! whoo!! im really excited. i havent done much. I went to bern and shoppped but thats it. I bought a rain jacket from H&M, its really cute!! haha I might be going to germany with another exchange student and her family. im reallly excited! but its not for sure yet. well i think thats all for now. im gonna try to write more often that way each time i dont have to stuff a bunch of stuff into one entry! haha

i love yall and miss yall!

Luzern Adventures

Friday September 14, 2007

Last Friday i got out of schoool at like 2:00, so i decided to take a trip to Luzern. There are some other exchange students there that i get along really well with. It was actually just a girl day!! it was really nice!! haha Luzern is GORGEOUS!!! its on a lake!! its sooo prety!! ahh!! well we walked around the town for a little bit. While we were walking, we heard some people speaking english so we stopped and then maggie screamed "Does anybody speak english here???" like really loud. And a lady in the group turned around and said, yes we do. It turns out, the group is from Austrailia. There were two teenage girls, a middle aged woman and an older couple. The middle aged woman was in Hungray for rowing i think, and so the family came to watch and they decided to travel all over europe since they were spending the money anyways. We talked with them for a while and the exchangers from Luzern told them what they should see. Maggie also asked if they would send her Tim Tams, which is some kind of candy. Im not sure exactly what it is, but she loves them. haha They said they would send her some! haha So now when maggie gets them, we're gonna have a tim tam party. So we then went to a bakery and got some muffins!!! blueberry muffins!! they were amazing!!! haha Oh and while we were walking we saw this guy painting a mural and it was of this castle and i did a puzzle of that castle with anna back in the states!! we did it one night! and it was like 500 pieces! We went to see an old church, and we played on a playground for a while! it was wayyy fun!!! Then we went to the Lion Monument which is for all the Swiss Soldiers that died in the wars. There we met another english speaking couple!! They asked us to take a picture of them in english and so we all started talking to them!! They were an older couple from South Carolina and the guy was a Rotarian. He was on a sebatical of some sort, history i think but i dont remember. The girls from Luzern then told them what they should do while they're in Luzern. and we talked to them about our exchange and stuff. We also gave them advice about food. After we left the couple, we went and had kebabs for dinner! They're the BEST food ever!! its kinda hard to explain.. so here are some pics i found on the internet....
^this is the actual sandwich! AMAZING!! ^this is the way they prepare the meat
but ya after that we went to this park where there was a concert gooing on, and we just danced in the park. it was so much fun!! haha after that i had to go home. it takes like an hour to get home on the train. but i had lots of fun with the girls!! haha

More exchange students were going to meet up in Luzern again so i decided to return to Luzern for the day, well i left Burgdorf at like 230, so i got to Luzern at like 4. But we walked around the town again. We were trying to find a migros or coop that was open but everyhting was closed! haha We went to Starbucks, but i didnt buy anything. I got ice cream from somewhere else, well actually gelato! it was soo much better and cheaper!! haha I am gonna try to go the full year without Starbucks or McDonalds. I know i can go the year without McDonalds but not so sure about Starbucks. Anyways..after starbucks we went on a boat ride! My first one in switzerland!! whoo!! haha it was lots of fun! so pretty! haha we stopped in some little village, i dont remember the name of it. but we found a playground and played for a while. it was fun!! haha there was this huge dragon!! we then took a train back to Luzern. In Luzern we got kebabs for dinner again, and then went to a park to eat and hang out. It was so much fun. I left aroudn 1045 and we took a train to olten but it was a slow train so we missed our train to burgdorf in olten. and so we had to wait till 1250 for the next train! it was like an hour!! ahh! so i didnt get home tilll like 130 or so!! but ya i had lots of fun

Hey Everyone!!

So i have been here for one month already!! I cant believe it!! Time has already gone by so fast, i cant even imagine what the rest of the year will be like!! WOW!! Here's a brief update of the last week:

Friday August 31
This was the last day of language camp! whooo!! We had our big test on Thursday, so all we did on friday was eat food we brought and get our test back. I got a 171 and half out of 200. I was really happy bc i think i had the third or fourth best test in the class! and there are like 8 people in my class! Well we got let out early, so we went on an adventure to Mt. Gurten which is amazing! Nathasha and I were the only ones that had been there before so it was lots of fun for the other exchanges. Plus it was a beautiful day to be up on Gurten. I have some cool pics.

i cant upload a bunch of pics so if you want to see more pics, go to:

Saturday September 1
A bunch of exchange students from Luzern came to Bern. All the exchange students that went to the Bern Language camp showed the Luzerners around Bern. We walked around Bern, went to the Bear Pits and then to Mt. Gurten. It was lots of fun to show people around. I was really happpy that I actually knew where I was going for once since ive been here.

Sunday September 2
My host dad and Dora(a family friend) took me on a walk through the hills of the emmental. It was GORGEOUS! We were gonna go to the mountains but it was too cloudy. We wouldnt have been able to see anything so we just walked through the emmental. Well to get back to the car, we were gonna take the train, but we would have to wait like an hour and the car wasnt very far away so my host dad hitch hiked to get the car and then came back with the car to pick Dora and me up. It was interesting! haha
